It was named Third-Mainland Bridge because it is the third of the three bridges that connects Lagos Island with the Mainland – the other two being the Eko and Carter Bridges. The Third-Mainland Bridge is the longest of the three bridges. The project was started and completed by the government of General Ibrahim Babangida. The scheme was built in two phases. Phase one saw construction between Lagos Island and the road interchange at Ebute Metta – a neighbourhood of mainland Lagos – between 1976 and 1980. is the second largest in Africa.
