Artist Bio

Grace Awe (b.1998) is a Lagos-based artist, a Textile designer and a painter. She combines her knowledge of the two aspects of art to create unique artworks dashing colours.. Her compositions are mainly naturalistic portraits of people, especially women, but she also creates semi-abstract designs. She pushes the boundaries of her ideas, media and processes through exploration. An example is how she conceived the use of shredded and rumpled threads to make moving pieces of art. From the bank of ideas available to her from both aspects of the arts, she freely uses ideas and techniques when the need arises, to portray the apparently accidental flow and folds that characterize her art pieces. Threads are rich in texture, colour, lines and tones, and she arranges them intentionally to achieve her designs. She starts work by making sketches from models, and sketches her colour schemes and begins a painstaking threading of her piece of canvas. Grace harnesses the qualities of the elements in her art and how they interact with each other during the creative process to make colourful art pieces. Her work is heavily influenced by spirituality and aspects of human existence such as relationships, emotions, and memories from the existential occurrences in her world. Through her art, Grace intends to spark deep thoughts and conversations that may cause individuals and society to rethink and act positively.
